Classic Sudoku: from controls to your first round

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Classic Sudoku. Fill all cells with 1–9; do not repeat a symbol in any row, column or region. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Check the rule that explains your first action. Use the example below to understand a decision.

One thing to notice as you play

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Use the example to check your reasoning.

The challenge in front of you

Fill all cells with 1–9; do not repeat a symbol in any row, column or region. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Making your moves

  1. Select an empty cell. The original clues cannot be edited.
  2. Choose a symbol from the number pad, or type it on a keyboard.
  3. Turn Notes on to record candidate symbols without committing an answer.
  4. Use Check entries to check your filled values. Hint reveals one value from the verified solution.
  5. Complete the board, or choose New puzzle for another board.

Making selections and moves

Tap or click a cell and use the number pad. Keyboard: arrows select cells; digits (and A–G on 16×16) enter values; Backspace erases. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

Try this example

On one puzzle in this collection, row 1, column 3 has 2 in its solution. Read the clues on your current board before using that value; another puzzle can need a different entry. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Keep the game’s format in mind.

A useful caution

Notes are reminders, not final entries. A full board only counts as complete when it satisfies every rule. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
